Course Overview

Autism is a diverse spectrum condition which effects different people in different ways. The National Autistic Society (NAS) states that there are over 700 thousand children and adults diagnosed in the UK and that there are currently more boys diagnosed than girls.

This training course describes what autism is, considers autism as a ‘spectrum’ condition and how each person will need a bespoke and individual approach to support.

This training course also identifies reasons why a good levels of autism knowledge is essential when providing support, for the benefit of the person being supported, support staff, families and/or carers and in demonstrating high service values.

This training course explains what is meant by ‘social communication’, ‘social interaction’ and ‘social imagination’, looks broadly at links into Flexibility of Thought, emotional awareness, the importance of structure and routine and adapting communication techniques including the value of visual communication.

This training course explains the meaning of sensory regulation (Ayres Theory) and evaluates different sensory related characteristics whilst considering ways of supporting people with sensory challenges and making environmental adaptations.
