Course Overview
This training course will explain how health and safety legislation in general and moving and handling regulations in specific relate to their work practices and procedures.
This training course will consider how current health and safety legislation, policies and procedures are implemented in the children and young person support setting and how work practices are influenced by legislation.
This training course will focus on recognising positive moving and handling techniques within the work setting, while also being able to recognise and eliminate poor practice.
This training course will give attendees the skills and knowledge to recognise poor moving and handling practice. It gives attendees the knowledge of how to report poor practice and positive alternatives to put in place.
This training course will enable attendees to develop their skills with the equipment they use to support the children and young people they support.
This training course will look at how to use that equipment safely and the potential consequences of incorrect use of said equipment.

- 1.1Summarise key points of the legislative framework for moving and handling in residential childcare settings for children and young people
- 1.2Explain how current health and safety and moving and handling legislation, policies and procedures are implemented in the work setting
- 1.3Explain the role and importance of risk assessments in relation to moving and handling
- 1.4Explain how moving and handling is monitored and maintained in the work setting
- 1.5Explain how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely
- 2.1Explain which bodily structures may be damaged by poor moving and handling in the work setting
- 2.2Summarise potential injuries common with poor moving and handling practice in the work setting
- 2.3Explain the anatomy of the spine and how poor practice may cause damage
- 3.1Explain “controversial techniques” (sometimes called “high risk techniques”) looking at why they are deemed controversial and the potential implications of using them
- 3.2Demonstrate good moving and handling techniques to help prevent personal injury in the work setting
- 3.3Demonstrate good practice that will ensure children and young people are supported correctly
- 4.1Explain correct and safe methods of using equipment
- 4.2Participate in a practical demonstration with appropriate equipment
